Robot Cell for Tending Parts Grinder

HMPS are primarily know for End of Line automation for the food and beverage industry, but our skill set reaches far wider. We have completed several industrial focused projects over the past few years with this project fitting that category.

We have just completed the installation of this project with a local South Australian business, Intercast & Forge. Intercast, a privately owned SA company is Australia’s largest iron foundry. They have been setting the benchmark for over 70 years and are currently exporting to more than 60 countries around the world.

The cell automates various finishing processes of cast iron parts. The cell had to have the flexibility to run a multitude of part shapes and sizes allowing for future scalability. Parts are manually fed into the system where a vision camera is used to detect the parts. To handle the part manipulation a foundry spec’d ABB IRB 6700 6 axis robot was selected. The robot transfers parts to the grinder, accurately locating the part in the grinder fixture. The robot then removes finished parts from the grinder, placing them on a conveyor to feed out of the cell. The system will detect a part which is incorrectly orientated on the in-feed conveyor, placing it at a waiting station for re-introduction into the system. A toolless, quick release mechanism on the robot allows for quick and easy gripper change over for future parts.

Robot Cell for Unscrambling & Sortation of Medical Plasticware

An interesting Industrial Automation project recently installed for an Australian manufacturer of medical plasticware.

The system included container unscrambling and orientation for 2 production lines. Each cell included a bulk hopper feeder, step feeder and ABB IRB1200 robot. Both cells can run simultaneously or independently depending on production requirements.

Each cell can sort and place 1000 units/hour for a total of 2000 units/hour. Containers range from 500ml cylindrical cups to 9ml test tubes.

RSC Robotic Casepacker Packing Doypacks

This project required working with heavy duty corrugated board. It is packing Doypacks at a rate of 90 per minute. Cartons are erected and bottom sealed before being collected by 1 of 2 ABB robots, the cartons are loaded by a belt driving the doypacks into the carton at an angle to allow for a shingling of product. Full cartons are then top sealed and ejected ready for palletising.

Mobile Lid Application System

Our client was looking to automate the application of labels to their lids. They needed something with the ability to be moved throughout the factory. Therefore, we created a stand alone labelling system, Mobile Lid Application, mounting on castors providing the ability to be used anywhere in the factory.

Turn Key Robotic Cell Packaging Ovens

Video of HMPS Turn Key Robotic Cell Packaging Ovens.

Did you know? The Electrolux Cooking Products Plant in Dudley Park, SA has been manufacturing whitegoods continuously since 1946, and currently employs about 450 South Australians producing more than 310,000 freestanding and built-in ovens and stoves annually under the Electrolux, Westinghouse and Chef brands.

What is HMPS’ role in this? HMPS was selected by Electrolux to support them in their latest project – the EPS Packaging Automation cell. This video shows some detail about six ABB robots applying the final packaging components to oven assemblies ready for transport. The system automatically detects each variant as it enters the cell. The robots automatically select the packaging elements to suit the oven variant from the large capacity part magazines. Packing 1800 Electrolux units, in a standard 8 hour shift – in other words just under 4 units a minute. All of this at an overall OEE of 90%.

How was this achieved? ABB robots, reduced operator interaction, bar code scanners, automatic selection of required model variant and packaging components were part of the solution. This solution gives Electrolux the speed and flexibility they need to run just-in-time manufacturing.
