A vertical form fill seal machine forms a bag from a flat roll of film, fills it and seals it in one continuous vertical process.

Film is drawn down over a forming tube, back-sealed, cross-sealed at the bottom, filled from above, then cross-sealed and cut at the top.

We build two motion platforms here in Australia.

Intermittent motion stops the film to make each seal, this is well suited to fixed bag lengths at moderate rates.

Continuous box motion seals on the move with a long adjustable dwell, which unlocks higher rates.

Both are matched to a filling system chosen for your product rather than adapted to it.

Solid

Vertical form fill seal (VFFS) machines are a natural fit for free-flowing and irregular solids. Typical products are snacks, confectionery, frozen vegetables, fresh produce, nuts, pet food, coffee beans and small hardware. They’re usually paired with a multihead weigher or volumetric cup filler for fast, accurate portioning. The machine forms each bag from a single roll of film, fills it and seals it in one continuous process. That gives high speeds, minimal giveaway and lower packaging costs than pre-made bags. Bag styles range from simple pillow packs to gusseted and block-bottom formats, and gas flushing can be added to extend shelf life for fresh and oxygen-sensitive products.

Liquid

For powders and fine granules, VFFS machines are usually paired with an auger filler. The auger gives precise, consistent dosing even with products that are dusty, light or difficult to flow. Common applications include flour, milk and protein powders, spices, sugar, coffee, premixes, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Dust control and clean seals are what matter most with powders, so these lines can be fitted with dust extraction, anti-static features and seal-jaw designs that cut contamination of the seal area. The result is a clean, reliable pack with accurate fill weights. Formats run from small sachets and stick packs up to bulk bags.

Powder

VFFS machines can also pack liquids and pastes into flexible pouches when paired with a piston or pump filler. Typical products are sauces, soups, dressings, dairy, liquid eggs, condiments and industrial fluids. Pouches use far less material than rigid containers and are cheaper to ship and store. They also suit food service, portion packs and bulk supply. Specialised sealing such as impulse or ultrasonic seals gives strong, leak-free closures even when product sits in the seal area. Hot-fill capability makes these lines a good fit for cooked and pasteurised products.

FAQ

What is a VFFS machine?

A vertical form fill seal machine forms a bag from a flat roll of film, fills it with product and seals it, all in one vertical process. Film is pulled down over a forming tube, back-sealed, cross-sealed at the bottom, filled from above, then cross-sealed and cut at the top.

Can a VFFS machine run recyclable or paper-based film?

Yes. Our machines run mono-material PE and PP structures, paper-poly, compostable and biodegradable films, and the current generation has validated paper-web capability. We’ll trial your film before committing to a rate.

What’s the difference between intermittent and continuous motion?

Intermittent motion stops the film to make each seal, giving a fixed maximum bag length and the simpler, lower-capital machine. Continuous box motion seals on the move with a long adjustable dwell, giving a higher ceiling rate, infinite bag length and better results on difficult barrier films.

What bag sizes can you run?

Flat bag widths from 60 to 600mm, and bag lengths up to 850mm single draw or 1,400mm double draw. Continuous motion machines have no maximum bag length. One forming assembly is required per bag width.

How accurate is the filling?

It depends on the filler. Auger fillers are contracted to ±0.5% of target at weights of 1kg and above. Multihead weighers achieve gram-level accuracy on lighter free-flowing product. We’ll specify the filler against your product and put the number in the quote.

Can a VFFS machine be washed down?

Yes, in three levels: wipe-clean as standard, a hosable level, and a full IP66 washdown build for dairy and meat. Sealing jaws are removed and cleaned separately at every level. Some configurations can’t take a washdown upgrade, so tell us your regime early.

How long does a bag size changeover take?

The forming collar is a tool-less quick change on every model. On our machines both the former and the end-seal jaw set are tool-less, allowing a simple changeover in minutes.

What does it need from my factory?

415V AC three-phase 50Hz with neutral and earth at 20A, and clean dry compressed air at 500 litres per minute at 6 bar. Allow around 1,500mm of clearance around the machine for roll loading and access.
